Why Jesus Asked Peter the Same Question Three Times?
Deep Made Simple·Deep Made Simple·26:26
Peter denied Jesus three times. Most people know that. What most miss is what happened next , and why, by the time Jesus asked the third question on a Galilean beach, Peter was in genuine pain. This study goes deep into one of the most carefully constructed scenes in all of Scripture. John 21 is not simply a forgiveness story. It is a precision restoration , threefold, deliberate, anchored in smell, memory, and a fire that Peter had stood beside once before on the worst night of his life. Two charcoal fires appear in the entire New Testament. Both are in the Gospel of John. Both have Peter standing beside them. The Greek word is anthrakia , a heap of burning coals, distinct from ordinary fire , and John places it first in the courtyard of the high priest on the night of the denials, and then again on the beach at dawn after the resurrection. Whether or not Jesus built that second fire to put Peter back inside the smell of his worst failure is a reading. But it is a reading that fits everything else John does in this chapter, and everything else Jesus does with broken people throughout the Gospels. This video also takes an honest look at the famous agapao versus phileo debate , the idea that Jesus asked for a higher love and Peter could only offer a lesser one. The case for that reading is laid out fairly. So is the case against it, because John swaps synonyms across these same three verses in four separate word pairs, and the two love words appear interchangeably elsewhere in his Gospel. What wounded Peter was not a vocabulary shift. John tells us plainly: it was the number three. Counting is how you undo counting. A general reassurance would have left two of Peter's three denials untouched. 📖 KEY VERSE "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." , John 21.17 (NIV) IN THIS VIDEO 0:00 The Charcoal Fire on the Beach 0:50 How Smell Triggers Memory and Guilt 1:25 Why the Third Question Hurt Peter 3:14 Who Peter Was Before the Denial 4:27 Peter's Three Denials in the Courtyard 6:19 Two Charcoal Fires John Links Together 7:55 The Miraculous Catch and Peter Swims Ashore 9:14 Do You Love Me More Than These 11:12 Agape vs Phileo The Greek Word Debate 14:16 Why the Third Question Broke Peter 16:08 Feed My Sheep Restoration as Responsibility 18:36 Peter's Future Death and Follow Me 20:46 The Good Shepherd from Ezekiel to Peter 22:32 What Peter's Restoration Means for Us 💬 What stood out to you most from this study?
