Does the Bible Support Slavery? The Honest Answer

Deep Made Simple·Deep Made Simple·27:38

Does the Bible actually support slavery? It is one of the hardest questions a believer can face, and one of the most common charges skeptics level at Scripture. The answer is not a quick yes or no. It takes honesty, careful reading, and the courage to say the hard verses out loud. The Hebrew word underneath most of those passages is ebed, and its range is enormous. A debt-bound laborer, a palace official, a prophet, and a polite self-description all share the same word. The English word slave loads a specific picture in every modern reader's mind before they finish the sentence it sits in. That picture is real, it is monstrous, and nothing in this study softens one inch of it. But it is not what the Hebrew text is always describing, and the difference matters enormously for an honest answer. Israel's law regulated a form of debt servitude the entire ancient world already ran on. What made it different was what it built around that arrangement. A six-year clock. A mandatory weekly rest day that stopped the whole household. Freedom for any servant an owner permanently injured. A ban on returning a runaway. A release year with a legal requirement to send the freed person off with grain, wine, and livestock. No other law code from that region came close. But the hard verses are in there too. Leviticus 25 permits buying from surrounding nations. Exodus 21 contains a clause about a servant being his master's money. A man can walk free in the seventh year while his wife and children stay behind. We read every one of those verses. Out loud. Without clipping them. Because the discomfort is not a failure of your reading. It is the beginning of an honest one. What Scripture never does is call the arrangement good. And it made stealing a human being a capital offense, which would have hanged the architects of every mass slave system in later history before they could build the first ship. 📖 KEY VERSE "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed."
