Why Jesus Called a Woman a Dog She Answered Back and He Agreed
Deep Made Simple·Deep Made Simple·25:27
Why did Jesus call a woman a dog? It is one of the most shocking lines in the Gospels, and most people either wince past it or skip straight to the happy ending. This study unpacks the full conversation, line by line, in both Matthew and Mark, and does not flinch. The woman is a Canaanite. In Matthew's vocabulary, that word is old on purpose. She carries the ancestral label of Israel's oldest religious problem. She has no covenant standing, no male advocate, and the twelve men around Jesus have already asked Him to send her away. Every social rule in her world says she should not have knocked on that door. Then He says it. "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." Two Greek words matter here and they are not the same word. The one Jesus uses, kynarion, is a diminutive that places the scene inside a house, at a table, with a family already eating. Not a garbage heap. A floor. And one small word, proton, meaning first, is sitting in the middle of that sentence like a door left open. She hears it. She does not argue about the vocabulary. She argues about the floor plan. 📖 KEY VERSE "For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter."
