Jesus Said "Turn the Other Cheek"—What Does That Actually Mean?
Depth of Scripture·Depth of Scripture·23:36
Jesus did not say "cheek." He said the RIGHT cheek. That one word changes everything. So what was he actually telling you to do when someone treats you like nothing? The answer runs from a backhand slap in a Galilean square, to a naked man in a debt court, to a Roman soldier begging for his pack back — and it is the opposite of weakness. "Turn the other cheek" has been used to tell abused people to stay and bullied kids to take it. But look at the Greek. The word for "resist" is antistēnai — a fighting word, the word for two armies taking the field. Jesus forbade answering violence with violence of the same kind. He never forbade standing up. In the ancient world a blow to the right cheek could only come from the back of a right hand — an insult, not an attack, and rabbinic law fined it double for exactly that reason. Turning the left cheek made the insult impossible. Handing over your cloak in court left the creditor holding a poor man's last covering in front of everyone. Carrying the pack a second mile turned a Roman soldier's power into a gift he could not compel. Then we go to the night Jesus was slapped before Annas — and he did not stay silent. We look at Peter's sword and Malchus's ear, Stephen, Paul asserting his Roman rights, David sparing Saul in the cave, the crowd that lay face-down before Pilate, and a bombed porch in Montgomery in 1956. This is the hidden meaning of one of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible — biblical symbolism, the Greek words, and a third way between fighting and folding. When was the last time someone tried to make you small — and what did you do with it? 📖 Scriptures in this video: Matthew 5:38-41 · Luke 6:29 · Genesis 4:23-24 · Exodus 21:24 · Leviticus 24:20 · Deuteronomy 19:21 · Exodus 22:26-27 · Isaiah 50:6 · Matthew 26:67 · Mark 14:65 · Matthew 27:32 · Luke 22:50-51 · John 18:10-11, 22-23 · Acts 7:58-60 · Acts 16:37-39 · Acts 22:25 · Acts 23:3 · Romans 12:17-21 · 1 Peter 2:23 · 1 Samuel 24 · Luke 23:34 · Ephesians 6:13 (Historical sources: Mishnah, Bava Kamma · Josephus · Epictetus · Herodotus · a Roman edict papyrus from Egypt, AD 19) 🕓 CHAPTERS 0:00 — Why Not Fight Back? 2:05 — Lamech, and the World Before the Law 3:50 — "An Eye for an Eye" Was a Ceiling, Not a License 4:40 — The Greek Word "Resist" Is a Fighting Word 5:50 — Why Jesus Said the RIGHT Cheek 7:45 — The Cloak: A Naked Man in a Debt Court 9:40 — The Second Mile and the Roman Soldier's Pack 12:40 — The Crowd That Lay Down Before Pilate 14:05 — The Night Jesus Was Slapped — and Spoke Back 15:55 — Peter's Sword, Stephen's Prayer, Paul's Rights 18:15 — David Spares Saul in the Cave 19:10 — Montgomery, 1956: A Bombed Porch 21:15 — Three Things to Carry 🔔 If you love the details everyone reads past — the meaning hiding in plain sight — subscribe.
