What "Judge Not, Lest Ye Be Judged" Really Means in Matthew 7:1

For most of the last century, the most quoted Bible verse in America was John 3:16. Today it is Matthew 7:1 — "Judge not, that ye be not judged." And almost everyone who quotes it stops one sentence too early. Because the man who said it on a hillside in Galilee was not telling you to stay quiet. He was telling you how to finally see. Read the next four verses and the meaning turns inside out. Jesus ends the passage with "then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye" — the speck is real, and it needs to come out. The person He is rebuking is the hypokritēs, a word that in the first century meant a stage actor holding a painted mask. This video walks the whole passage the way the crowd on that hill heard it: the carpenter's joke about a karphos (a fleck of straw) and a dokos (a load-bearing roof beam), the Greek grammar that means "quit judging" rather than "never judge," and the two commands a few verses later — pearls before pigs, wolves in sheep's clothing — that are impossible to obey without judging. We follow the same idea through Hillel's saying "do not judge your fellow until you have stood in his place," the rabbinic proverb "measure for measure," Paul's blunt question to Corinth, and the readings of Chrysostom and Augustine.
