Why Did Jesus Call a Desperate Mother a Dog? (Mark 7)
Depth of Scripture·Depth of Scripture·20:24
A Gentile mother is on her face, begging Jesus to heal her little daughter. And he answers: "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." Did Jesus really say that? And why? The answer runs from the Greek word for a small house dog, to twelve leftover baskets of bread in Galilee, to a widow in Sidon eight hundred years earlier — and once you see it, you can't unsee it. In the seventh chapter of Mark, Jesus walks out of Israel into Tyre, the city of Jezebel, and meets a Syrophoenician woman whose child has an unclean spirit. What he says to her sounds like the harshest sentence in the Gospels. This video looks at what the sentence actually means: why Jesus used kynarion, the little dog under the table, instead of kyon, the scavenger outside the wall; why the word "first" means there is a second; why the children in that sentence had already been fed in Mark 6, with twelve baskets left over; and why Jesus is walking in the footprints of Elijah to the widow of Zarephath. Then we look at her answer — and the one word, Kyrie, that no other human being in the whole Gospel of Mark ever says to Jesus. Along the way we separate what the Bible says from what history adds: Josephus on Tyre, John Chrysostom and Augustine on why Jesus waited, and Martin Luther's famous sermon on the woman who "caught Christ in his own words." This isn't a story about a slur. It's a story about a door that was never locked. Have you ever kept praying after the answer looked like no? 📖 Scriptures in this video: Mark 7:24-30 · Matthew 15:21-28 · Mark 7:1-23 · Mark 6:30-44 · Mark 8:1-10 · 1 Kings 17:8-24 · Luke 4:25-26 · 1 Kings 16:31 · Matthew 8:5-13 · Romans 1:16 · Acts 12:20 · Philippians 3:2 🕓 CHAPTERS (fine-tune ±10-20s after final render) 0:00 Did Jesus Really Call Her a Dog? 2:53 What Tyre Meant to a Jew 4:36 "All Foods Clean" — Then He Walks Into Tyre 5:54 The Mother, the Little Daughter, and the Silence 8:20 Kyon vs. Kynarion — Which Word for "Dog"? 9:55 "First" Means There Is a Second 11:39 Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath 12:57 Her Answer — She Caught Him 13:57 The One Word Nobody Else in Mark Says 15:49 Great Is Your Faith — and Luther's Sermon 16:58 She Went Home 17:58 Three Things to Carry Home 🔔 If you love the details everyone reads past — the meaning hiding in plain sight — subscribe.
