If You Understand John 17, You Understand What Jesus Wants

Jesus' longest recorded prayer is twenty-six verses long. He prayed it out loud, in the street, less than an hour before his arrest. Two-thirds of the way through, he stopped praying for the men around him — and started praying for someone who hadn't been born yet. If you've ever believed because someone told you, that someone was you. In this video we walk through John 17 line by line — the prayer scholars call the High Priestly Prayer — and show why its three-part structure (for himself, for his disciples, for everyone who would ever believe) follows the exact order of the high priest on the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16. We look at the Greek words that carry the weight of the chapter: doxazō (glorify), tēreō (keep, the way a night watchman guards), hagiazō (set apart), hen (one), and thelō — the only place in the whole prayer where Jesus says "I want." We see how "I have finished the work" in John 17:4 becomes "It is finished" on the cross, and how the very night Jesus prayed that his people would be one, Caiaphas the high priest was plotting to make sure they wouldn't be. Then we get to verse 20 — the sentence where Jesus prays for you — and ask what he actually asked for. It isn't success. It isn't comfort.
