What Did Jesus Write in the Dust? (John 8)
Depth of Scripture·Depth of Scripture·23:11
Jesus wrote exactly once in the entire Bible. With his finger. In the dirt. And the one man who watched him do it refused to tell us what it said. For two thousand years people have tried to guess — and one verse, written six hundred years earlier by a weeping prophet, may be the closest anyone has ever come. It is the morning after the Feast of Tabernacles. The lamps in the temple have gone cold. And a group of scribes and Pharisees drag a woman caught in adultery across the pavement and throw her at the feet of Jesus with a question built to destroy him: stone her, and he breaks Rome's law; free her, and he breaks the Law of Moses. There is no third door. And Jesus says nothing. He bends down and writes in the dust. In this video we walk through every serious answer to what he wrote. The oldest tradition, known to Jerome, says it was the sins of the accusers. Others point to the exact witness law of Deuteronomy 17 and Exodus 23 — the rule that turns the trap inside out. We look at the only two other places in the Bible where God writes with a finger: Sinai, and the wall of Belshazzar's palace. We open the strange dust ritual of Numbers 5. And we finally reach Jeremiah 17:13 — "those who turn away from you will be written in the dust" — spoken about the very spring of living water Jesus had claimed to be the day before. We also tell you honestly why this passage is missing from the earliest manuscripts, and why the early church kept it anyway. The Greek word John chooses is katagraphō — to write down, to write against. The Law was written in stone. The record against you was written in dust. If Jesus knelt in front of you this morning and wrote in the dust, what do you think he would write?
