The Hidden Meaning of "Be Still" in Psalm 46:10 (It's About Your Hands)

The Hebrew word behind "be still" in Psalm 46:10 is harpu. It does not mean be quiet. So what was God actually telling a city under siege to do? The answer runs from an Assyrian army outside Jerusalem in 701 B.C. to a doorway in Deuteronomy — and once you see it, you'll never read this verse the same way again. "Be still, and know that I am God" is printed on mugs, pillows and funeral programs. Most of us hear it as a command to calm down, sit quietly, meditate. But the Hebrew word in Psalm 46:10 is harpu, from the root raphah — to let go, to release, to let your hands drop. It is the word Pharaoh uses to call the Hebrew slaves "slack" in Exodus 5. It is the word Job uses when he refuses to let go of his righteousness, the word the Shulammite uses when she will not let go of her beloved, and the word God speaks to stop the angel's hand over Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 24. Every time, it is about a hand.
