Why the Book of Ruth Is Hiding in Your Christmas Story

Nobody reads the Book of Ruth in December. And Matthew opens the Christmas story with a genealogy almost everyone skips. Why did he stop that list — four times — to name a woman? The answer runs from a barley field outside Bethlehem to a manger in the same town, a thousand years later — and once you see it, you can't unsee it. In this video we slow down inside Matthew chapter one — the "boring" first page of the New Testament — and discover it is a thesis statement, not a phone book. Four women interrupt the chain of fathers and sons: Tamar, the wronged Canaanite widow of Genesis 38. Rahab of Jericho, the woman with the scarlet cord — who became the mother of Boaz. Ruth, the Moabite widow a written law excluded "to the tenth generation." And a fourth woman Matthew deliberately refuses to name. Then we walk through the Book of Ruth as what it really is: the Christmas story told a thousand years early. A famine in Beit Lechem, the "House of Bread."
